Pink diamonds are the rarest and most valuable natural commodity on the planet, and many connoisseurs are dubbing pink diamonds as the ultimate gemstones for jewellery and investment.

Pink diamonds unlike white diamonds have a specific colour grading scale, specific to the nature of pink diamonds in exemplifying their beauty and allure.

Hue

  • The most dominant colour aspects of a pink diamond, such as a purple or red tint
  • Saturation
  • How strong the pink in regards to the hue. Hue saturation within a pink diamond has a huge range, from light and subtle to a vivid powerful pink.
  • Tone

Australian pink diamonds

90% of all pink diamonds are found in the Argyle diamond mine located within Australia. These diamonds are exceedingly rare due to the unique colours of the stones only originating from said mine, with the pink colouring of the Australian variant being incredibly vibrant. The diamond mind is set to close in 2021 due to the extremely high price of extraction the deeper the mine becomes. Becoming unviable to maintain open, the mines closing is set to cause a huge cut in supply for pink diamonds. Therefore, experts are predicting a huge spike in value for pink diamonds as demand remains with supply dwindling. Now out of the 133 million raw carats of diamonds mined each year, only 0.01% are pink diamonds, 10,000 carats on average.
For visualisation purposes the globally mined annual diamond output is on average 30 tons equaling to 5 elephants, whilst every single pink diamond ever to be mined would only equal to roughly 80 kilograms, about the weight of a full keg of beer.

What causes pink diamond colouring?

The unique colour per gemstone is caused by how the minerals interact with the compound elements of a diamond. This is dependant on origin of the stone and mineral count, dependant on the origin specific colours become more common within the diamonds.
Pink diamonds are constantly under scientific speculation for their unique colours. Current explanations suggest ‘Plastic Deformation’ which means that a high-pressure graining resulting in a compressed internal structure. Due to this reason its extremely rare to find a Pink diamond with a clarity grade considered high, with many containing surface or internal graining lines within the atomic structure.
