A coloured diamond is graded on the intensity of its colour rather than its absence, on a scale that runs from Faint to Fancy Vivid. That changes how a stone is set: claw and bezel work is cut to keep as much of the stone open to the light as the setting safely allows, and the metal is chosen to hold the colour rather than compete with it.
